No Performance Service Plan for me.. and Dr. Rob
I got a little complain about Best Buy… I bought a digital camera last summer, a Panasonic DMC-LZ5 a decent camera, good zoom (6x optical), OK price… $230 at the time. I also got a 4 year “Performance Service Plan” for $60. At last Red Sox game I went to, I accidentally dropped it, and it broke (Doh!). They say that “impact damage” voids my plan, therefore it cost $176.09 to fix the camera… I could buy a decent new one for $150 or less now a days… So I paid for 4 years of so called “protection,” thinking it’ll save me some money. Instead I got nothing for it… Very frustrating. My colleague David says “Never get those extended warranties.” and I guess I have learned my expensive lesson…
Another story about the same camera: When I bought it. Remember the BestBuy commercial like this? A wife asks her husband, “Where is the gift for your brother?” and he lies “Oh, it’s at the store, and I just needs to go pick it up.” He goes online, orders it, and they pick it up on a way to the party. … Well, it doesn’t happen. You can’t do that. I saw that commercial, and did the same thing (yes, call me naive) thinking I’d save some time… And when I get to the store, they asked me “did you ever get a e-mail saying it is ready to be picked up?”
Completely different topic: but I read the Globe article about a doctor who blogged about the on-going trial and that ultimately resulted in settlement. It turns out that’s Dr. Rob from Manic Mommies. OK, I’ll admit, I am a closet Manic Mommies subscriber since when I bought my first iPod… In the article he comes across as a arrogant jerk, but he is actually pretty interesting guy who is, yes, maybe not like typical doctor and controversial, but in his own way cares about kids and parents and has many practical good no-nonsense advices. What he did, however, writing anonymously about a trial involving parents who lost their 12 years old, in the tone, is not very smart or sensitive thing to do… Interesting reactions here and here…
