The Gyro
There you have it, folks. He throws gyro!
Matsuzaka talked to press at the press conference in Ft. Myers yesterday, and the last question was “do you throw gyro?” His answer: “I knew I was going to be asked that question and I thought of few way of answering… I am going to say this, ‘I’ll throw it when the chance arrives.’”
He was full of smile when he said it, after it is translated to English media by the new Japanese media liaison Sachi Sekiguchi (standing in for Masa Hoshino, Daisuke’s personal translator, who was stuck in Canada because of the weather), he asked Japanese reporters “was that a good answer for the question?”
I’ve read both books about gyro ball. One by Kazushi Tezuka “Secret of Magic Ball,” and one by Ryutaro Himeno, “Creating the Magic Ball.” I’ve read it cover to cover, especially Tezuka’s book a few times over. According to the books, it’s Daisuke’s “High Speed Slider” that is suspected to have gyro spin. Gyro spin is like a spiral, like football QB’s pass. And in this clip, Himeno answers most frequent question: “which way does Gyro move? Does it fall? Does it cut in like curve to left-handed hitter?”
Himeno’s Answer: it does both, or all. Depending on which angle spirals spin axis is. It is sort of like knuckle ball. All it matters is that it comes in like hanging curve and changes direction near the hitter….
This is great, let the head game begin! Go Daisuke!
