I am working on this sort of fun project which involves using Zen-Cart, open source shopping cart, but in Japanese. (BTW, for Japanese language pack, this support thread was very useful… Thank you Shida-san of Japanese language support group). During this process, I hit a minor problem. Zen cart send out an e-mail alerts (such as “Thanks for signing up, here is your password”, or “Thanks for placing an order with us, here is your invoice and order number”… well, I guess that’s not very minor…) and for this to properly work, it needs to be EUC-JP encoding, and not UTF-8 Unicode encoding.
I use BBEdit as my primary text editor, and it works really really well with UTF-8 Japanese, (and TextMate doesn’t… yet, anyways, that’s why I switched back) but BBEdit does not handle EUC-JP encoding too well, actually doesn’t like it at all. I was using xemacs form the command line (emacs is good with euc-jp) to edit those files, but I found a awesome alternative: MI Edit (or used to be called Mimikaki Edit). It absolutely rocks. It handles all Japanese encoding (like Shift-JIS or ISO-8859-1), and switching them in between and saving is like a breeze (Choose from the drop down to select the encoding you like. Hit save. Done.) All those years I was using nkf -w filename.txt > filename.utf8.txt all i needed was this software. Thank you, MI EDIT!
