Asian GM to replace Theo? Bring it on!

I’ve been writing about this whole Theo fiasco in Japanese at my other blog (babelfish translation here), but in today’s Herald piece, Sox GM race up for grabs, Kim Ng’s name (pronounced “ing”) was floated among the four possible up-and-coming GM candidate. I’ve written about her before a couple of times, but in a nut shell, she is not only the most powerful Asian (she’s the daughter of a U.S.-born father of Chinese descent and a Thailand-born mother of Chinese descent) in baseball, but maybe most powerful woman in baseball: as an assistant general manager for Los Angeles Dodgers, she “handles all roster moves, trades and contract negotiations for the Dodgers, and is on track to become baseball’s first female G.M.” (taken from 101 Most Influential Minorities in Sports) She worked her way up in the Chicago White Sox organization, and was named assistant GM of the Yankees in 1998, at 29. After working for the Yanks for four years, she joined the Dodgers in 2002. Wouldn’t that be awesome to have only female GM in the major league baseball? and she is Asian! This is how you can change the label/image of the Red Sox: “Last major league team to field a black player.” Seriously, think about it, Mr. John Henry, Larry Lucchino and Tom Warner!

Also I am thinking of starting (half kidding… but half serious) a club called “Steve Xiang club.” The club is named after one of my favorite Red Sox blogs’ fictional character, Soxaholix. Here is his bio.

Steve
Steve XiangLike Tara, Steve Xiang did not grow up in New England but came to the region from the West Coast to attend college in Boston in September of 1985. At that time, he had little interest in baseball but when the 1986 team electrified the city, Steve was hooked.
Unlike Tara, however, Steve has picked up most the personality traits that mark the typical Red Sox fan.

As I read this, I said “Hey, I AM Steve.” And I am thinking there are bunch of ‘Steves’ out there. So if you are Asian and love Red Sox, join “Steve Xiang club” :)

Update: Kim Ng could be Dodgers GM. Awesome. I might become Dodgers fan. (I still don’t have a NL team…)
