Asian Americans on the move

It was last week, but I went to a panel discussion called Asian Americans in Politics. It was very interesting. Sam Yoon was one of the panelist (that’s how I learned about the event), along with other local Asian politicians Prof. Paul Watanabe, Ramesh Advani (R - Selectman Nofolk), Amy Mah Sangiolo (D - Newton Board), and Greer Tan Swiston (R - Candidate Newton Board). It was at Northeastern, where I graduated from, and now it has its own Asian-American Center. That is great. I like going to those political event especially ones that doesn’t just focus on one party. Those are the place you find what you are, or at least leaning toward.

The Yasukuni debate is back up again. A bit old but still good overview, China-Japan ties hit ‘new low’? This debate never dies. When I go to Japan in July, I may try to visit the shrine. No, not to make Chinese people mad, but I want to see it in my own eyes and judge on my own if it is “Shrine for war criminal” like it is often labeled, or “Peaceful Country Shrine” which the name Yasukuni Jinja stand for. I know in fact that there is a mural (or very large painting) of glorified Japanese soldiers in Manchuria - a hot button for anyone - there, but I also hear that most exhibit in the museum is anti-war, and for-peace.

Speaking of interesting exhibit, Archivist of the Yellow Peril, sounds pretty good. This guy collected books, posters, pamphlets and films of Asians in the eyes of a stereotype-prone America. I’d like to see it next time I’m in NYC…

Other interesting sites about Asian Americans that I found while writing this blog: Open Directory on Asian Americans, AsianAmericans.com, AsiansInAmerica.com.

I knew Asians are one of the fastest growing minority, but it really hit me when I find out that we were even singled out as a marketing target by large companies like McDonalds and Budweiser. Amazing, isn’t it?
