I hate Apple

Today’s Globe has a pretty good article about old Mac vs. Wintel war, but bottom line is, Macs are way too expensive. They’re taking advantage of their elite status. It’s like beer price in Fenway Park,
, they charge whopping $6.50 for a beer. That’s what I pay for a six pack. Anyway, I’ve done a little research on what the G5 tower is going those days and its exactly the same price wherever I look.

So the reason I am looking for a Mac is my Sawtooth finally died. Well sound familiar? because it happened before. Not once but twice. This time I was transferring kind of large file over ssh to other machine, and system hung, and had to be rebooted. And it never came back.

By holding down Option key to start, Mac will go into Open Firmware to select a boot device. When I do that, I see my hard drive, but selecting to start from it, it freezes at the white background with apple logo. So I start from install disk, and run a Disk Utility. it reports:

Verifying volume "d"
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Catalog file entry not found for extent
The volume needs to be repaired.

Volume Check failed.

So then I try to run “Repair Disk”

First Aid failed
Disk Utility stopped repairing “d” because the following error was encountered:

The underlying task reported failure on exit

This hard disk is the one I purchased last May, Seagate Barracuda IV 80GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive. Didn’t last a year? Now I can’t even install OS X on it. See I hate Apple.
