Three movies in three nights

Spirited Away, The Triplets of Belleville, and Lord of the Rings: Two Towers.
I didn’t know anything about it, except that it was nominated for Oscars, but The Triplets was awesome! French movie but no subtitle needed. Visually and musically it was super entertaining. Cool, jazzy, artistic, beautiful, and funny. Really one of the best movie experiences I had in the recent years. The music rocked and I loved Bruno the Dog! If you haven’t seen it, go see it. It’s too bad that the US website doesn’t do justice, but the French one is pretty good (Anglais)… except I couldn’t do view some pages.

Hayao Miyaszaki’s Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no Kami-Kakushi, 2002 Oscar Animated Feature Film winner) was good, but… mmmm, how do I put it, too much like Alice in Wonderland, or reminded me too much of some gimmick that I have seen before (Like in the beginning, a girl was moving with her parents… didn’t Totoro start out that way?). I was very disappointed with Princes Mononoke, so it was much better but it lacked that My Neighbor Totoro’s super unique originality, the magic. Maybe my expectation was too high. With all that said, it was good, I’d recommend this, too.
I’m sure nobody needs recommendation, but I really can’t get in to the whole lotr thing. Am I missing something? The first one (Fellowship) didn’t do it for me, and I tied The Two towers, tried very hard to “get it”. But I can’t get passed “Oh, I hate that Gollum character” or “Gosh, Orcs, or Uruk-hai or whatever, are gross, do I have to look at them?” Similar to what my reaction to JarJar Binks in the StarWars. I am sure I am missing out on something great. The sure do have lots and lots of downloadable desktop pictures though. Each character gets like 5 desktop pictures and an AIM icon. Very smart marketing strategy. I wish the Triplets did the same…
Here’s a list of movies I should check out… Past Oscars nominations of Japanese films

I agree, Daigo. But we’re surely in the minority on thinking the LOTR is crap. I think it has something to do whether you liked the books. I hated the first one.

    Also, note to Rich Whelan.

    I love Miyazaki’s works. They’re always imaginative and sweet….. Fascinating fantasies….
