Hisui Sugiura

Hisui Sugiura (1876 - 1965) was a commercial artist/designer in late 19th century to during the war time in Japan. After graduating from Tokyo Fine Art University, he went to Europe and learned about Art Nouveau movement, European poster ads, and commercial design. He became art director of Mitsukoshi Department Store, where he introduced commercial art to Japan. His work includes: Mistukoshi Poster and this cigarette ad.
Late he was became principle of Tama Art University, and among many things, he published design study/research magazine called Desegno. that’s where I got my design studio’s name. (I am not related to him or affiliated any of those university in Japan.)

    contact the national museum of modern art in tokyo who have his collection and produce an informative illustrated book on him.
