Setting up my old PC for front-end web development

I am a Mac user. I like Apple, except that it is frigging expensive, as anyone who have bought an Apple computer knows.

I have an OK Lenovo ThinkPad that I have owned for a while now (Looked it up: I bought it April 2008 and paid $637.50 for it), it is 14.1 inche R61i, Intel core duo 1.73 GHz, 2GB RAM and 67Gb HD with Windows Vista running, 1280 x 800 resolution screen. Little heavy, it’s 5.2 lbs.

I used it for browsing, checking my emails etc, but I have not really used it to code. I am going to change that now.

Apple is like what Microsoft used to be, so I am thinking different and using some PC…. Maybe. (Though if I had enough money, I’m sure I’d be buying MacBook Air in no time…

Here is my plan, and some notes while I am doing this.

Just downloaded Sublime Text 2 editor, which is available for Mac and Linux. I am a BB Edit guy (*can’t live without its grep), I always have and probably will be, but slowly transitioning to Sublime has been more smooth than any other text editor. I’ve tried TextMate, and Coda, but always came back to BB Edit. Sublime handles Unicode/Japanese really well, and that is huge.
On PC, I have been using EmEditor, which is great for unicode/Japanese, but I was also using Notepad++ for non-Japanese project. Sublime on PC will solve a lot of problem for me and kind of psyched about that.

Next up is GitHub and I wanted to try out their new GitHub for Windows. So far so good. Pretty slick!

And last but not least, I am downloading/installing WAMP server. But I am pretty dumb and I don’t even know my machine is 32 bit or 64 bit, or I don’t even know what that means. My guess is 32. Then I found this: thank you Microsoft.

Click the Start button, right-click Computer, and then click Properties. See System Type:

Aha! 32-bit OS.

I had to download and install Visual C++, but other than that, it was fairly straight forward. And Aha! localhost works. Except that it is displaying “403 Forbidden.” Probably a permission issue. Well, I am stuck there. To be continued.

Going to bed.

Update: Trying this, but no luck so far.

Update 2: Aha. Read this. Instead of using localhost, I can just use http://127.0.0.1/ as the address and it works perfect. MyPhpAdmin works, too. Beautiful. I will be installing WP on this. Wow, this is amazing.

This link Optimize Windows Vista for better performance, was pretty useful.

Also set up dropbox to move files over to and from the other computers. Oh, and if you want to sign up to Drop Box, use this link please http://db.tt/z09bsyeq . I think I get free 500 MB space if you sign up using that. And Thank you.

Update 3: found this link which explains how to set .less extension to sntax highlight as css. Also just downloaded SimpLESS. Seems pretty good.
