Quick RIA Unleashed memo before I forget…

I was at an event today called RIA Unleashed Boston 2010 at Bentley College. I was about the only designer type (if I can call myself even that…) that was at the event and I felt a little intimidated among those Flex developer types discussing that this three-letter acronym is better than that three-letter acronym… But some of the presentation was just amazing, it was super inspiring and I was very motivated. I have learned so much, and learned that there is a lot more learning to do!

First one was GAIA framework by Steven Sacks, a super smart guy. This frame work, very easy to install – just download .mxp file from the website and run it, and it appears in “Windows -> Other Panels” and it is just simply amazingly elegant and easy to create/organize the flash based websites. (Panel is written in JavaScript, I guess. That is cool, too.) I can’t believe that I was doing this by hand before (not that I always create full scale flash-based site, but…). Best of all, all of this is OPEN SOURCE. That is right, free as in free beer *and* free speech. It takes so much repetitive work out of it that it made me create next freelance project with Flash…

Second one was on 3d in Flash, such as Away3d or Pepervision3d, a talk by Charlie Schulze, another very sharp guy, of Papervision2.com. The website has a lot of great tutorials on how to start the 3d effect and animation and I was just simply blown away by the stuff that it can do. I like math, so this is going to be a lot of fun! I am going to play with the Away3d starting next week…

Honestly, I am not really concerned that HTML5 is going to take over and there will be no flash any more… I like flash.

Gotta go to bed. I am getting up early tomorrow to go camping(!) with son’s cub scout…
