Trying to install Xubuntu on iMac G3/333

xubuntu on iMac G3/333

I have been trying to install Xubuntu on G3/333 but to no avail at this point. Sort I should take memo here so that at least it will all be in one place.

iMac is my wife’s old computer that was sitting in the basement. I wanted to recycle this and maybe give it to my son, who is interested in computer and ununtu comes with It is the Apple iMac G3/333 (Fruit Colors, Strawberry)(M7440LL/A*) and only have 128 MB RAM on it (I think… maybe 64, I need to check it out).

  • I got the Xubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) powerpc disc image from this URL
  • I had to do this, because of “No common CD-ROM drive was detected” error: Switch to a second console pressing ctrl+alt+F2
Press Enter to activate that console and type modprobe ide-scsi via this URL
  • Ubuntu powerPC known issue wiki is very useful.

I still have long way to go so more to come…

THANK YOU! I would’ve given up on getting my cd-rom drive working with the installation, but “mobprove ide-scsi” worked :D

  • Welcome…

...to Daigo’s Daily Digital Diorama. This is utterly useless online journal (yes, that was what it was originally called before term "blog") that I've been keeping since 2002. Since it is ".org," my wife once called it a nonprofit nonsense. I use this blog mostly about baseball, and being Japanese man in America. Wondering who the heck Daigo is?
