R.I.P. Streamsicle

I first installed Streamsicle in April 2002 and loved it, I think it was version1.2 then. Since then, I’ve recommended to anyone and everyone, and was a big advocate. It all ends now. Somehow, I ran a yum update on my linux machine and it no longer runs. I got error 404. And I couldn’t get it to work on my new server. I get long error “Error: 500 Location: /index.jsp Internal Servlet Error: javax.servlet.ServletException: sun/tools/javac/Main....“. Mmmmm. Their support forum looked very abandond. In fact, teir last update was April 2003. And I see this on one of the developer’s blog. Now, what do I do with a hard drive full of my mp3 collection? Fear not. Source Forge » Topic » Multimedia » Sound/Audio » Players » MP3 spits out a bunch that I think would like to look into:

  • GlobeCom Jukebox – Powerful and reliable mp3 jukebox with web based interface. Key features include sophisticated random song selection, web based interface, integrated ripper, streaming, multi-user capable, album cover art. Runs on Linux using PHP & Mysql.
  • SnackAmp – SnackAmp is a powerful multi-platform audio music (mp3, ogg ,wav, streams …) player and organizer for large music collections. Manage your entire collection, including ID3 tagging and auto-playlisting. Integrated web server for remote control/streaming
  • Tunez – Tunez is an MP3/Ogg Vorbis jukebox that works with a voting system. It is ideal for LAN parties since it allows all users to have input into what is played (or streamed).
  • Zina is not Andromeda – Zina is a graphical interface to your MP3 collection, a personal jukebox, an MP3 streamer. It can run on its own, embeded into an existing website, or as a Postnuke/PHPNuke/Xoops/Mambo module. It is similar to Andromeda, but released under the GNU GPL.
  • streambox – Streambox is a web interface for live mp3 streaming. It can be installed on a linux machine with one or more soundcards. Streambox is meant to be used as the only interface to the machine: it does not need a keyboard or monitor.
  • Agatha – mp3 Your Way – Agatha is a web based mp3 playing system that allows the home user or office group to stream music, create, manage and share play lists and control the playing of music on a remote system. Agatha needs no database.
  • Webbased Music Jukebox – WMJ is a PHP based jukebox for playing MP3 music straight from your Linux server. It creates a database of all your MP3 files with detailed header information(ID3). The jukebox can play in random, single and playlist mode.
  • OpenStream – OpenStream is a Web interface for MP3/ogg collections. It catalogs your collection and streams selected files and playlists. The size of the interface is ideal for use on handhelds and for embedding in a Web site.
  • otto audio jukebox – otto is a web based mp3 database and jukebox which can gracefully organize a very large number of albums. it is suitable for home or office workgroup use, or as an interface to a streaming internet ‘radio’ station.
  • JReceiver Audio Server - JReceiver is a servlet-based audio server which features tightly integrated metadata indexing capabilities, browser-based management, an XML-RPC interface and support for network-based MP3 players like the Rio Receiver from Sonic Blue.

Here is what I want: Needs to support mp3 and lots of it. Server needs to run on Linux (FC3), Stream needs to be played on iTunes on Mac or xmms on Linux. (I don’t care about Windows). Needs to have web interface. Easy to maintain and Needs to read ID3. And hopefully have pretty good community based help or forum where I can ask questions…

Some of those software mentioned use IceCast technology and here is The Unofficial Icecast HowTo. And also from Mac OSX Hints and some blog thread on the stream issue.

I am using SnackAmp as a jukebox and I find it’s web interface and streaming very good.
    Runs under Linux and Windows.
Other great features include volume normalisation.

I’m having a similar problem. I had been using the free jukebox software from Slim Devices, but unfortunately it sucks too much to bear. In fact it sucks more and more as time goes on, instead of the expected less and less suckage.

    My requirements are:

    0. Runs on a headless server and dishes out streams to client computers via web interface.

    1. Secured web interface: either the jukebox has a user system, or it will run behind .htaccess user/password.

    2. Media files do not have to be stored in the web hierarchy.

    3. Database: I don’t care if one is required or not.

    4. Platform independence. I am a FreeBSD guy so I want something that uses PHP, perl or something like that as the main brain. I would prefer not to run linux binaries, it’s another hassle for me.

Thanks for posting these links, I am checking them out. Slow day at work…
