Back from Hawai’i

Crazy. While I was out of the state, the Sox wins it all and, related or not, one of my website, japaneseballplayers.com is attacked… Very frustrating. I was very disapointed, sad, and angry, but I think I will look at the bright side of things and am going to try to build it again from the scratch. It will be good, it was due for major upgrade anyway. One of the thing is I would like to start using WordPress for everything… instead of MovableType. I found a Japanese version (well, Multilingual Edition) of WordPress, I think I am going to try it out.

Hawai’i was great. My brother’s wedding was beautiful and it was very nice to see my family. Waikiki was a bit tacky… too many souvenir shops. I got to eat tons of Japanese food, which was great, but felt like we didn’t experience any of “local” culture. It was like being in Japan without going to Japan. Very strange.

We went to USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor, It was good to visit such a historical site, especially the country is in a war. National geographic has an awesome interactive on Peal Harbor. Interesting facts that I learned there:

  • Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, who recommended the attack attended Harvard.
  • Commander Mitsuo Fuchida, who led the attack as a pilot later became Christian missionary.
  • Yosuke Matsuoka is the guy who walked out of League of Nations and signed Tripartite Pact with Nazi-Germany and Fascist-Italy.
  • Kichisaburo Nomura and Saburo Kurusu were the ambassador to the US and was in nagotiation in Washington when the attack happened. Nomura is even on the cover of Time Magazine
